with your letter under reply that the sea wall bounding

this reclamatian is being constructed as a deep-water

vertical quay wall and that a similar construction is

contemplated for future extensions. We conclude, therefore,

that considerations of which we have no knowledge hars

outweighed the disadvantages, referred to in our letter

of the 7th October, 1922, which are involved in the

construction of a deep-water wall at this site.

It remains for us to deal merely with the specific

points connected with the design of the deep-water quay upen

which ear advice is now requested.

6. The first design for this deep-water quay, which

fronts Marine Lots 430 and 431 md is new under execution

by contract, vas prepared by Mr. Duncan, late Port ‘Engineer,

and provided for a trench dredged on the line of the work

down to a suitable stratum and then filled in with sand to

a level of 39 feet below L.V.0.8.7. The surface of this

sand was to be astered with quarry spalla above which the

foundations were to be completed with pell-mall rubble which,

in addition to forming a base for the vertical wall of

concrete blocks set in sloping bịnd above, also formed a

vide apron in front thereof,

Owing, however, to the contracter being unable

to procure sand of the specified quality, Mr. Duncan, in

order to permit the use of a finer-grained sand, modified

his first design by limiting the surface of the sand in the
